I believe the letters are a birthday message for me :) I have just printed it to solve, so looking forward to it.

I left hints but didn't want to give it away. I will say, however, I was inspired by an Area 51 with a coded message that Pavel Curtis shared with me after bestowing the gift on a puzzler in his family. I may borrow that mechanic for a future posting... :)

Oooh, new puzzle! Yay! (also thank you!) Um, what's with the letters? They don't seem to be explained in the rules.
