Chess pieces break up a giant 12 by 12 sudoku grid already filled with killer sudoku cages. Can you place the digits 1 to 9 while obeying the sums?

You're right - that should have been 19. I think I missed one of the cells when adding them up. I'll fix this shortly.
I tried to come up with symbols that look close to the pieces they represent, but if you know of a specific site or resource that uses better symbols please let me know and I'll consider changing mine to look similar.

Well, I'm glad I found the right solution. I found that some of your earlier chess puzzles seemed to have more immediately recognizable pieces, specifically June 6 2010. The October 18 puzzles used these same pieces.
I think the specific feature that causes my visual confusion is the shape of the "hips" which is the same on your bishop and king. If you look http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop_(chess) for example you see that the bishop image has a wide flat bottom while the king piece is more like a crown, narrowing in at the bottom instead of flaring out. I think making the bottom bit of the king vertical or slightly sloped in, instead of sloping out, would be the key difference for me.

I've reposted the puzzle again after changing the style of the king pieces. Joshua has seen them already and gives his approval, but all other visitors should take a look and let me know your thoughts as well.

Mistaken bishop? I thought i had solved this puzzle with everything forced, but the 17 bishop gives me a sum of 19 instead. Should I start over, or is there a typo?
I think if it's my mistake the most likely reason is that sometimes I confused the kings for bishops. I'm not sure why I kept seeing them incorrectly but I know it happened more than once while I was solving. Maybe you can use images that are closer to the "standard" chess symbols?
